10 Things to Do With Kids in Elkhorn & West Omaha This May

It's going to be 72 and sunny on Saturday, and you have no plan.

Welcome to parenting in May in Nebraska. The weather, hopefully, has finally stopped pretending. Soccer is almost over. School is almost over. And the text chain has gone quiet because everybody else is also pretending they have it figured out.

we made a list.

Ten things to actually do with your kids this month in Elkhorn and West Omaha. Save this. Send it. We'll keep updating it.

1. Walk the Zorinsky Lake trail.

Six paved, stroller-friendly miles with at least three playgrounds you can bail out at along the way. The north playground has the most shade if your kid melts before noon. Parking is easy off 156th.

2. Catch opening week at Papio Bay Aquatic Center.

Memorial Day weekend is the kickoff for pool season. If you have a toddler, the zero-entry pool will save your vacation. Bring the sunscreen you already own. Do not buy the $14 bottle at the snack stand.

3. Explore Chalco Hills Recreation Area.

The visitors center has free kid activities on Saturdays, including a nature scavenger hunt. The trail around the lake is one mile, which is about the perfect length for a kid’s attention span.

4. Make Saturday morning a Village Pointe thing.

The farmers' market runs from May through October. The kettle corn lady is kid-tested. The live music starts around 10.

5. Check for a free day at the Omaha Children's Museum.

Check their calendar. They offer free admission days for Douglas County Library cardholders once or twice a month. Plan around the crowd.

6. Storytime at the Elkhorn Library.

Tuesday mornings at 9:30 and 10:30. Friday mornings at 10:30. On Wednesday mornings at 10:30, they host Music & Movement, which focuses on early literacy skills through song, dance, play, and short stories. It’s free, air-conditioned, and a lifesaver on a rainy day.

7. Catch a free concert at The Shops at Legacy.

The summer concert series starts in May. Bring lawn chairs, grab food from the trucks, and let the kids run in circles while you actually finish a sentence.

8. Schedule a Sunday brunch.

If you haven’t already, Block 16, Early Bird, and Stokes are kid-friendly and won’t make you feel weird about bringing a toddler. Schedule your brunch now so you don’t forget.

9. Go see the tractors at Kubota or John Deere.

The Elkhorn dealerships don’t mind kids walking around and climbing on the display tractors during business hours. It’s free, air-conditioned, and good for at least one solid hour of dad points.

10. Try a Sunday morning at Love Church.

We mean it, try one. It’s 75 minutes. Your kids will have their own space, their own teachers, and a secure check-in so no one walks out with them but you. No one will single you out. No one will ask you to sign up for anything. Wear whatever your family feels comfortable in.

If your family tries one new thing this May, we’d love for it to be Love Church.

Sundays at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM at 20120 Blue Sage Pkwy in Elkhorn, or online if that fits your life a little better.
