Baptism at Love Church: What It Is, Why It Matters, and How to Take the Next Step

Baptism is one of those words that can feel confusing, especially if you didn't grow up in church.

Maybe you've wondered what it actually means. Maybe you've been thinking about taking that step but aren't sure what to expect. Or maybe you've been around church your whole life and just want a clearer understanding.

This guide is for you.

Here's what baptism is, what it isn't, and what you can expect on Baptism Sunday at Love Church.

What baptism is

Baptism is a public "yes" to Jesus.

It’s the moment you say, out loud, in front of people, that you are choosing to follow Jesus. Scripture uses the word over and over, and it always shows up as a visible step after an invisible decision. The decision happens in your heart. The baptism happens in a tank of water in front of your friends.

At Love Church, that means stepping into the water and celebrating your decision alongside your church family.

What baptism isn't

Baptism isn't a graduation.

It's not something you earn after you've been a Christian long enough. You don't have to have the whole Bible figured out, have all the answers, or get your life perfectly together first. In the Bible, many people were baptized soon after deciding to follow Jesus.

Baptism also isn't what saves you.

Christians believe we're saved by God's grace through faith in Jesus, not by a ceremony or a good work. Baptism is how we publicly celebrate the decision that's already been made. It matters deeply, but it isn't what makes God love or accept you.

And it isn't a performance.

Nobody is going to grade your story. Nobody is expecting a perfect testimony. Nobody is judging how you look or what you say. We simply want to celebrate what God is doing in your life.

What happens on Baptism Sunday at Love Church

The first step is signing up at lovechurch.org/baptism.

Once you register, someone from our team will reach out with a few simple questions about your story. Nothing intimidating. We just want to get to know you and celebrate what God is doing in your life.

On Baptism Sunday, you'll arrive a little early.

We'll have a Love Church T-shirt ready for you to wear in the water, and you'll meet the other people being baptized that day.

Then the Encounter begins.

At the right moment, you'll step into the baptism tank. Pastor Mike, or one of our pastors, will ask you two simple questions: Have you trusted Jesus as your Savior? Are you choosing to follow Him as Lord?

You'll answer, "Yes."

Then you'll be baptized in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

When you come up out of the water, don't be surprised if the room erupts in applause.

Your family and friends will be cheering. Kids will be celebrating. And yes, there's a good chance you'll cry a little too.

Afterward, you'll change back into your dry clothes, head back into the Encounter, and celebrate with your church family.

Who can be baptized?

Anyone who has decided to follow Jesus.

That includes kids who are old enough to understand what baptism means and choose it for themselves (for many families that's around age 8, but every child is different). It includes teenagers, adults, people who recently became Christians, and people who have followed Jesus for years but have never taken this step.

If you've said "yes" to Jesus but have never been baptized, this is your invitation.

Common questions

"I was baptized as a baby. Should I be baptized again?"

Many people at Love Church ask this question. We believe baptism is a personal decision someone makes after choosing to follow Jesus. If you were baptized as an infant and now want to publicly declare your own faith, we'd love to celebrate that step with you.

"What if I'm not sure I'm ready?"

That's okay. You don't have to force a decision.

Come talk to us. Ask your questions. Take your time. Our team would love to walk with you as you figure out your next step. There is no pressure and no rush.

"What if I change my mind later?"

Following Jesus is a lifelong journey. Baptism isn't about claiming you'll never struggle or never have questions again. It's about saying "yes" to Jesus with the faith you have today and trusting Him to keep growing you along the way.

How to take the next step

Ready to be baptized?

Sign up at lovechurch.org/baptism, and our team will follow up with everything you need to know about the next Baptism Sunday and how to prepare.

Still figuring out the question before the question? That's okay too.

If you're not sure what you believe yet, come spend a Sunday with us. Sit in a row. Listen. Ask questions. Bring your real self and your real doubts.

You don't have to have everything figured out before you walk through our doors.

That's how the journey started for many of us.
