Moving to Elkhorn, NE? Here's How to Find a Church That Feels Like Home

Welcome to Elkhorn.

If you're reading this in a half-unpacked living room with a dog that still doesn't know where home is, we get it. Moving is a lot. And somewhere on the list, between the new dentist and the first oil change in a new zip code, is the question, “Where do we go to church?”

That question can feel heavier than it should. So we wrote this for you: a local pastor's honest guide to finding a church in Elkhorn that actually feels like home.

First, the lay of the land.

Elkhorn sits on the west edge of Omaha, just off West Maple St. and 204th. You've probably already driven past Blue Sage Pkwy, the shops at Legacy, and the long stretch of new builds off Dodge St. Good news: there are a lot of churches within a fifteen-minute drive. The not-so-good news: most of them look pretty similar from the outside. Picking one based on vibes alone is hard.

Five honest questions to ask any church you visit.

Before you walk in the door, decide what matters. These are the five we'd tell our family to ask if they were church shopping in a new city.

1. What's the kids' ministry actually like?

Not the brochure version. Ask to see the check-in desk. Ask about the pickup process. Ask if volunteers pass background checks. A church that takes your kids seriously tells you everything about how it treats people.

2. How long is a service?

If a church can't tell you, that's a flag. At Love Church, services (we call them Encounters) are 75 minutes. Start to finish. No surprise altar calls, no guilt-trip extensions.

3. What is expected of me?

Some churches want you to join a small group, serve on a team, and start giving in your first month. That's a lot. A healthy church lets you show up for as long as you need to before anyone asks you for anything.

4. Who is the lead pastor, and does his life match his preaching?

You don't need a TED talker. You need someone who tells the truth, lives in your city, and knows his own kids' names. Pastor Mike O'Connell leads Love Church and is raising his family here.

5. How will I know if this is my church?

You'll know when your kids ask to come back. You'll know when you drive home quietly, not exhausted. You'll know when a week without it feels like a week without something you need.

What a Sunday morning in Elkhorn actually looks like.

A Sunday at Love Church is a 75-minute Encounter, modern worship, a plainspoken message from Pastor Mike (or one of our other Teaching Pastors), and kids in their own space (birth through fifth grade). You’ll park near the front, walk into a lobby with real people talking to each other, and, this part matters, you will not be singled out as a guest. No standing up. No ribbon on your shirt. No spotlight.

If you're nervous, come at 9:00 AM. It's our quieter service. If you like a little more energy, come at 11:00 AM.

A quick first-timer FAQ.

Do I have to be a Christian?

No. We have people in the room every Sunday who are figuring it out.

What if I haven't been to church in years?

Welcome home.

What about my kids?

They’ll have their own space, their own teachers, and a tag match pickup so nobody walks out with them but you.

What should I wear?

Whatever you wore to Target this morning.

Our address is 20120 Blue Sage Pkwy, Elkhorn. Sundays at 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM. If a Sunday morning at those times isn’t workable for your family, we also meet at our North Omaha campus at 10:00 AM (3223 N 45th St) and online at 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM.

One last thing.

Finding a church in a new town is not really a Google search problem. It’s a “do I still want to be going six months from now?” problem. You’ll only know by walking in. So walk in.

We saved you a seat.
