To the Person Who Feels Far From God Right Now

You haven’t lost Him.

Maybe it’s been weeks since you prayed and truly meant it. Maybe your Bible is somewhere in the house, but you couldn’t tell someone which room it’s in. Maybe you still believe. You’d say yes if someone asked, but something that once felt close now feels quiet.

You keep waiting for the feeling to return on its own.

It probably won’t. Not because God is far away, but because closeness usually isn’t a feeling you wait for. It’s a rhythm you return to.

This Is More Common Than You Think

If you’ve walked with God for any length of time, you may have experienced a season like this. It doesn’t always look like a crisis or a conscious decision to walk away. Sometimes, life simply gets loud. A few rhythms get interrupted, days turn into weeks, and before you know it, distance begins to feel normal.

But this season doesn’t define you or disqualify you. It’s simply where you are right now, and God is still near.

God Hasn’t Moved.

It’s important to remember that even when God feels far away, it doesn’t mean He has moved away from you.

Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed”. Close. You don’t have to earn your way back to Him.

Even when God feels far away, He is still close, still present, and still ready to meet you right where you are.

Reconnecting With God Can Start Small

It’s easy to assume that reconnecting with God has to begin with a big emotional moment. A breakdown. A rededication. Tears at the front of a room.

Sometimes it does. But often, it begins with one simple step.

It might look like reading one chapter of your Bible, praying a quick prayer like, “I don’t really know what to say, but I’m here,” or showing up on a Sunday after being away for a while.

Small steps still matter.

Start With a Simple Rhythm, Not Guilt

Guilt makes you feel like you have to fix everything at once.

A healthy rhythm invites you to choose one small step and return to it again tomorrow.

Here are a few places to start:

Read one chapter. Not a plan or a study. Just one chapter in any translation you have on hand, whether it’s before bed or with your morning coffee.

Pray honestly. You don’t need the perfect words. Even something as simple as, “God, I feel far away, but I want to be close to You again,” is a meaningful place to start.

Show up on a Sunday. We call our Sunday gathering an Encounter. You don’t have to feel anything in particular when you walk in. Just take the step and come.

None of these will fix everything at once, but each one is a step toward feeling close to God again.

God Is Ready to Welcome You

This isn’t meant to make you feel guilty or ashamed. It’s simply a reminder that feeling far from God doesn’t mean He is far from you.

In Luke 15, the prodigal son begins making his way home while rehearsing everything he plans to say. But before he can finish, his father sees him, runs toward him, and welcomes him home.

That’s the heart of God. He isn’t standing at a distance, waiting for you to prove yourself. He is ready to meet you as you take the next step toward Him.

So, if you feel dry, distant, or somewhere in between, remember this: you’re not as far away as you think.
