What Is a Group, and Why Do I Need One?

What Is a Group, Really?

A Group isn’t a class, and it isn’t a clique. It’s simply a smaller place to build real relationships, grow in your faith, and have people in your life who actually know you.

If you’ve heard us say, “Get in a Group,” and weren’t totally sure what that meant, you’re not alone. It can sound more formal than it really is.

At Love Church, Groups are about doing life with people on purpose.

A Group is a smaller group of people who meet regularly to build relationships, talk about life and faith, and grow together.

There are Mixed Groups, Men’s Groups, Women’s Groups, REV Groups for students in 6th through 12th grade, and Care Groups for people walking through a specific season where they may need a little more support, healing, or encouragement.

Groups don’t all look exactly the same. Some meet in homes. Some meet at Love Church. Some naturally bring together people in similar seasons of life, while others include a mix of ages and backgrounds.

What they have in common is simple: people choosing to keep showing up for each other. That’s where real connection has room to grow.

What Makes a Group Different

Groups give you a smaller setting to build real relationships, talk about life and faith, ask questions, and grow alongside other people.

You don’t need to come in knowing everything or feeling completely comfortable talking about your faith. Groups are meant to be welcoming, conversational, and easy to step into.

They also complement what happens on Sundays.

Sunday Encounters give us a chance to worship together, hear God’s Word, and be part of the larger church. Groups create more space for conversation, encouragement, prayer, and the kind of relationships that grow over time.

Both matter, and together they help make church feel less like something you attend and more like a community you’re part of.

Who Are Groups For?

Groups are for people in all kinds of seasons.

Mixed Groups are a place for adults to build community across different ages and stages of life. Men’s and Women’s Groups create space for more specific conversations and relationships. REV Groups give middle and high school students a smaller community where they can build friendships and grow in their faith.

Care Groups are there for seasons when you may need more focused support. Whether you’re walking through something difficult, healing from something painful, or simply looking for people who understand the season you’re in, they offer a place to be supported and encouraged.

You don’t need to wait until you’re going through something difficult to join a Group. Sometimes you simply need people in your life who know you beyond a quick conversation on Sunday.

Because being around people and being known by people aren’t always the same thing.

Why Groups Matter

We were never meant to follow Jesus completely on our own.

Proverbs 27:17 says: “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.”

Growth often happens through relationships. Someone encourages you when you need it. Someone asks a question that makes you think differently. Someone prays with you when life gets hard or celebrates with you when something good happens.

At Love Church, we call this part of the 5S Life Surrounded. Surrendered, Surrounded, Spirit-Led, Self-Fed, and Sent are all part of becoming who God created us to be. Surrounded reminds us that we don’t have to do that alone.

A Group gives you people you can be honest with, people who will pray for you by name, and people who can walk with you through more than just the highlights.

Finding the Right Group

You don’t have to know exactly which Group is right for you before you start.

You might be looking for a Men’s Group or Women’s Group. Maybe a Mixed Group feels like the best fit. If you have a student in 6th through 12th grade, a REV Group can help them build deeper relationships with other students and leaders. And if you’re walking through a season where you need some extra support, a Care Group may be the right place to begin.

The important part is simply taking the first step.

You can explore Groups at Love Church and find one that fits your season, schedule, and stage of life.

There’s Room for You

A Group may look pretty simple from the outside. A handful of people in a living room, around a table, or meeting at church. But over time, those simple moments can become real friendships.

You start remembering each other’s stories. You celebrate wins together and show up when life gets hard. That’s what Groups are really about. Not another thing to add to your schedule. People to do life with.
