What Is Prayer, Really? How to Start Talking to God

You Don’t Have to Know What to Say

For a lot of people, prayer can feel intimidating simply because they’re not sure where to begin.

They think it has to sound formal, like there’s a right way to sit, a right order to follow, or certain words they’re supposed to use. And when they’re not sure what to say, they end up saying nothing at all.

But prayer is simply talking to God.

You can begin with a few simple words, even if all you can say is, “God, I’m here.”

What Prayer Is

Prayer is a conversation, not a performance.

It’s talking to God about what’s really going on. The good, the difficult, the confusing, and even the everyday things that may not seem important.

Philippians 4:6 says:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” (NKJV)

Made known.

Not perfected. Not polished. Simply brought to God.

Prayer can look like:

  • Asking God for help

  • Thanking Him for something

  • Sitting quietly when you don’t have many words

  • Telling Him when you’re hurt, frustrated, or confused

  • Reading a verse and praying those words back to Him

There isn’t just one right way to pray. It all begins with turning toward God and trusting that He’s listening.

What Prayer Isn’t

Prayer isn’t a formula. There isn’t a script you have to follow or a certain order you have to get right before God will listen.

It also isn’t measured by how long it lasts. A ten-second prayer in the parking lot before a hard meeting is still a real prayer.

Prayer isn’t about earning an answer, either. You don’t have to pray better to get a better result. You pray because you have a Father who wants to hear from you.

And prayer isn’t reserved for people who have it all together spiritually. It’s for anyone who knows they need God.

Common Questions

What if I don’t know what to say?

You can begin with whatever is on your heart.

“God, I’m tired.”

“God, I’m thankful for my kids.”

“God, I don’t understand what’s happening right now.”

You can also pray Scripture back to God. The Psalms are especially helpful because they give us words for so many of the emotions we carry.

Does God actually answer prayer?

Yes, though not always in the way or timing we would choose.

Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes it’s no. Sometimes it’s wait. And sometimes God gives us peace before anything around us changes.

Philippians 4:7 describes it as:

“The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding.” (NKJV)

That peace may not remove the problem right away, but it can steady you while you walk through it.

Do I have to kneel, close my eyes, or use certain words?

No.

Those things may help some people focus, but they aren’t requirements. You can pray while driving, washing dishes, sitting at your desk, or lying awake in the middle of the night.

God is listening to your heart, not grading your posture.

What if my mind keeps wandering?

It’s okay if your mind wanders.

When you notice your thoughts drifting, gently bring your attention back to God. Prayer isn’t a test you fail because you got distracted. It’s a relationship you can keep returning to.

Is there a wrong way to pray?

You don’t have to hide what you’re thinking or feeling.

God already knows what’s in your heart, so you can come to Him with your questions, frustration, fear, gratitude, or doubt. Nothing you say will surprise Him or make Him turn away.

Where to Start This Week

Choose one moment in your day, while you’re having coffee, driving to work, or getting ready for bed, and make it your time to talk with God.

You don’t need an agenda or a certain amount of time. Just begin with a few simple words and keep coming back.

Prayer can begin with one simple moment of turning your attention toward God.
